The REMIQS Project: Summer 2021 Milestones

The Robust and Equitable Measures to Inspire Quality Schools (REMIQS) project is designed to illuminate how schools are able to outperform expectations when it comes to serving historically marginalized populations. This is a multiphase study that aims to uncover the practices, policies and structures highly successful schools implement to ensure their most vulnerable learners flourish. While schools may be out for the summer, REMIQS activities are in full swing.

We wanted to share a few highlights of what we’ve been up to:

  • Communicating with school leaders: We hosted conversations with leaders at each school site, identified in the quantitative filtering phase, to introduce the team, provide an overview of the project, answer any questions and discuss next steps.

  • Confirming participating school sites: We are currently wrapping up a memorandum of understanding (MOU) among KnowledgeWorks, WestEd and each participating site/district.

  • Preparing announcements: We are getting communications materials ready to announce our participating schools. Be on the lookout for (and share!) the press release, social posts and email blasts that will go live in early August.

Coming up next for the REMIQS project:

  • Identify REMIQS Fellows: We will identify a REMIQS Fellow at each school site to be a primary point of contact and partner in planning data collection activities during site visits and help with outreach to school staff, students and community members.

  • Initiate the Institutional Review Board process: All research activities will be reviewed and revised or approved including all processes for soliciting and receiving informed consents from all research participants. This process ensures all research activities align with site standards, and protect research participants’ confidentiality and anonymity.

  • Access and Analyze: We will begin accessing, downloading, and analyzing school/district documents. The REMIQS team will review a range of documents to get a sense of the programs, curriculum, history, staffing, resources, strategies, institutional features, and surrounding community of the school.

  • Prioritize research team’s Focus: We will conduct video interviews with key school and district personnel and community leaders to help define where the research team prioritizes its investigations.

We will periodically share updates around our efforts. Feel free to reach out (remiqs@knowledgeworks.org) if you have any questions or would like to learn more about REMIQS activities.
